A renowned Japanese designer and photographer, Yasumichi Morita interprets the beauty of light and shadow with a unique view and takes an in-depth look at the meaning between virtual concepts and reality through monochrome photography. Currently on display at the ALIEN Art Centre in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, the exhibition - The Universe of Sensation features four series of Morita’s works: Porcelain Nude (2015-17), Rodin x Morita (2024), In Praise of Shadows | Ise Jingu (2023), and In Praise of Shadows | Château de Versailles (2023). Among them, Porcelain Nude stands out as the most iconic one.
First exhibited in Paris in 2015, following its tour in London, Paris, New York, and Tokyo, Porcelain Nude features close-up shooting to elaborate the delicate space formed by the curves and lines of the human body. As Yasumichi Morita puts it, “I wish to present the beauty of curves in the form of art, just like that in sculpture. Most things in the world can be broken down into straight lines and curves. As architecture demonstrates the strength of straight lines, space shows the softness of curves. The human body, for one, is undoubtedly the best presentation of curves. Therefore, when I photograph the human body, I do not attempt to present just the body itself, nor do I try to give any erotic connotation, but simply focus on those elegant curves.”
For this reason, when appreciating the Porcelain Nude series, viewers do not always realize that the subject in the picture is the human body right away; instead, they often see forms of objects that resemble porcelain sculpture. These curves are still, but also dynamic, where there is tension of life. This feature comes from the simplification of complex elements by Morita and his utmost interpretation of lines that are monochromatic, filling the piece of work with a beauty that is interwoven with eternity.
As The Universe of Sensation is on, ALIEN Art Centre presents Porcelain Nude: Yasumichi Morita - the limited catalog signed by Morita, with which collectors could review the beauty of the human body curves found in all the works in the series, as if they were revisiting to the exhibition. With the dynamic rhythm of the art pieces imprinted in hardcopy, the catalog underscores the value of the collection and stretches it into infinity.
