Explore the Plan

In the digital age, cultural globalization is extended through the desire logic of a handful of powerful nations, leading to the reordering of cultural production and everyday affairs worldwide. What mechanisms, then, underpin this invisible set of rules for selection and dissemination?

When we discuss a globally relevant image or picture, it seems easy to invoke a scene from the existing classification systems in our minds. Beyond these rules and classifications, what elements or scenes are filtered out or excluded by the system or mechanism? Perhaps it is indefinable spaces, ownerless territories not marked on any map, or drifting lands... How are these selections and arrangements of scenes or elements, which seem to belong to 'globalization,' established and presented to us?

Moreover, with the convenience of images readily available online, the brilliance and novelty of pictures gradually fade; the images and scenes of globalization, whether beautiful or disastrously incomplete, become homogenized and flattened in the fickle and impressionable human mind, hardly lingering long.

People pride themselves on mastering the pulse of technology, comprehensively capturing every view and piece of information. But in relying on technology, might we also be understanding the world through a filter, constructed by this invisible order?

HSIEH Yu-Ciao primarily works with moving image, mixed media, and spatial installations. In recent years, her practice has centered around the "green screen" as a conceptual metaphor to explore what is obscured, excluded, or made visible in the context of a globalized digital era. Her work reflects on how contemporary media, information systems, and technological infrastructures shape fragmented imagery and symbols, and how these elements reconstruct human perception and cognition. Her artistic inquiry also extends to the blurred boundaries between virtual and real, the expansion and externalization of sensory experience, and a continual attempt to transcend anthropocentric frameworks. Through this, she proposes dialectical questions about the complex and dynamic relationship between media technologies and life itself, seeking possibilies beyond conventional definitions.
Her works have been exhibited at institutions such as the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei (MoCA Taipei), ALIEN Art Centre in Kaohsiung, WHATZ International Contemporary Art Fair, and the Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts, and have also been presented in Hong Kong, China, and other regions.
