/ The Luminous Chapter & The Formative Chapter: Sonic and Kinesthetic Synesthesia

Not every act of viewing requires sound, yet sound will arise here.

In Dust and Gold, the Luminous Chapter and the Formative Chapter respectively invite musicians and dancers to enter into dialogue with the works of Makoto Fujimura and Shozo Michikawa, through gestures of sound and movement. Like fleeting traces of light slipping through fissures of space — flowing outward, diffusing, and spreading — light and sound, force and dance, illuminate one another within the exhibition.

Through their observation and affective response to the works, musicians and dancers improvise. These improvisations are not meant as performances, but as acts of listening, attunement, and resonance — responding even to emotions that resist articulation.

Dust and Gold is an exhibition of profound stillness, yet it harbors energies awaiting release. Visitors are invited to sense the converging forces within the act of shaping, and to perceive the resonances of tension, rotation, and release.

Yu Ying Hsu
A Taiwanese jazz pianist, composer, arranger, and music producer, she holds a Master’s degree in Jazz Piano Performance from the State University of New York at Purchase. Her style blends classical training with jazz improvisation, and she actively participates in cross-disciplinary collaborations, performing widely across Europe, Asia, and the United States.
In 2019, her composition PROJECT 3 | CHAPTER III:INDIA, ITALY AND I won the 30th Golden Melody Award for Best Composer in the Instrumental Category. Her 2018 album happened, happening earned three Golden Melody Awards.
“Dust” embodies the weathering of matter and the sediment of time; “Gold” represents glimmers of light and echoes of conviction. Hsu’s music mirrors this contrast: deep, resonant piano tones carry temporal weight and emotional strata, while sudden bursts of improvisation shimmer like golden light across space.

Wen-Hui Tsai
Wen-Hui Tsai graduated from the Royal Conservatory of Brussels with a major in Jazz Studies. She is now an active jazz vocalist, composer, and educator performing across Europe and Asia. Having spent many years living, performing, and creating in Europe, Tsai is regarded as one of Taiwan’s most distinctive jazz singers, known for her unique musical language and aesthetic sensibility. Her performances blend jazz standards, stylistic reinterpretations, original compositions, and experimental sounds, expanding the expressive boundaries of jazz.
In recent years, she has led the a cappella sextet Vestige, releasing an album and touring extensively across Europe to critical acclaim. Tsai is known for liberating the “human voice” from melodic confines, allowing music to flow through raw and instinctive energy. Her approach to improvisation resonates with the abstract spatiality found in the works of Makoto Fujimura and Shozo Michikawa, evoking an inner dialogue with light — a true resonator of space.

Hu Chia
Hu Chia is a third-generation artist and descendant of Taiwan’s Monkey-Crane Double Form Chuan Qigong, a nearly 200-year-old martial art. As founder and artistic director of Miè Theatre, he uniquely blends traditional martial arts with modern dance to express life’s resilience and vulnerability. His work combines resistance to fate with the quest for love and freedom, embodying martial arts' selfless spirit. Hu Chia also integrates calligraphy with contemporary art, addressing traditional and social themes with openness. Having performed and exchanged culturally in over 20 countries, he continues to expand his artistic vision globally through a rich and distinctive creative practice. His unique corporeal language and spiritual vision converge seamlessly with Dust and Gold’s exploration of silence and eruptive force. Through his body’s resonance with the inner dynamism of sculpture, audiences are invited to experience the flowing energies embedded within the works.
