Mia Liu (1980–)
Born in Taiwan in 1980, currently lives and works in Taipei.
With an open and experimental approach, Liu continually reexamines and reflects on the notions of “painting” and “painterliness.” She seeks to uncover abstract poetry within the ordinary moments of everyday life, exploring possibilities beyond conventional boundaries through the connections between sensation, memory, and nature. With a sensitivity to materiality, she reveals the expressive potential of forms and media, reflecting on the philosophical dimensions of lived experience. Although her works take diverse forms, Liu's practice remains rooted in her understanding of traditional painting. By moving beyond the constraints of conventional media, she has gradually developed a distinctive drawing-based artistic practice.
Rather than deliberately challenging the boundaries of different media, her works engage in a dialogue that reconsiders the nature and possibilities of painting, expanding its modes of expression. At the same time, Liu seeks to evoke a sense of pure aesthetic experience through her work. Although such a pursuit may not be central to mainstream contemporary art, it remains an essential aspect of her artistic exploration.
In 2009, Liu received the Grand Prize of the Kaohsiung Fine Arts Award and participated in the Asian Art Biennial that same year. Her works have been widely exhibited at major art institutions, including White Rabbit Gallery in Sydney, the Ludwig Museum of Contemporary Art in Budapest, CODA Museum in the Netherlands, Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay in Singapore, and OCI Museum of Art in South Korea. Liu was also selected as a finalist for the Sovereign Asian Art Prize and has participated in several international artist residency programs, including the Glenfiddich Artists in Residence program and the Cité internationale des arts in Paris.
