Video is one of the most crucial media for creation in contemporary art, and video art comes in different types and with various elements. There are traditional films, experimental films, documentaries, animations, and motion images. In addition to the wide array of media, there can also be more dialectical examinations of ideology, due to the advancement of new technology. Image creation can be seen as experiments on aesthetics and also a process of putting ideas into practice. In that sense, Video Sandbox serves as a testing environment. A sandbox, in tech, refers to an isolated testing environment that enables users to run programs without affecting the application and system on which they run. The idea of isolation brings uncertainties that turn into possibilities. This project adopts the sandbox metaphor to incite more possibilities in image creations, building an experimental arena for artists to conduct trials and embody their ideas using images and videos.

Video Sandbox is a one-year project for experiments on image creations. In exhibition spaces at ALIEN Art Centre, artists are invited to curate their projects throughout the whole year and share what they learn from these experiments. The project also sets the goals of promoting video art in southern Taiwan and introducing it to more young talents. Meanwhile, the project serves as an exchange platform, where there can be exchanges among art institutions from different countries to boost the promotion of such an art form in southern Taiwan.
